Visit Tortilis Camp

Tortilis Camp is an award-winning luxury tented camp in Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is best known for unrivalled views of Kilimanjaro and its elephant population – over 1000 elephant in the Park eco-system, which are some of the biggest elephant in Africa. Tortilis Camp is named after the flat topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated just outside the Park in one of Amboseli’s few remaining areas of unspoilt woodland, with the majestic backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, snow-capped Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation

Tortilis Camp has 17 spacious tents, all with elegant en-suite bathrooms with showers and modern flush toilets. Each tent leads from a bedroom with expansive king-size or generous twin beds, through a dressing area into modern bathrooms with pressured hot showers and flush toilets. Each tent is raised up on a wooden deck and sheltered by a makuti (thatched) roof overhanging a large verandah, ideal for an early afternoon siesta.

From the comfort of your own private verandah, you can see for miles across the plains of Amboseli into Tanzania. Relax in the lounge and gaze at the awe-inspiring view of Africa’s highest mountain: Kilimanjaro. Your tent is naturally screened by trees and shrubs from others. At night, the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep. Before evening drinks and dinner, enjoy the view from your tent verandah. Watch elephant families close by as they forage just outside camp. Guests sleep under canvas, but in style. Large comfortable beds, elegant bathrooms and a hot cup of tea at your bedside when you wake up.

Activities

Laze by the pool with a refreshing drink. Swim and relax until it’s time for a game drive and sundowners. Tortilis Camp is renowned for its delicious homestyle cuisine. Fresh herbs and vegetables are grown in camp and homemade pasta, Tortilis’ speciality, is carefully prepared by the chef, trained by the owner’s mother in good Italian home cooking. And to work up your appetite, you can enjoy the luxury of stepping out of the camp with a Maasai expert for a guided gamewalk outside the park. Alternatively, one of the driver-guides will take you on a game drive through the park in one of the camp’s custom built 4×4 safari vehicles.

Tortilis is open all year round. Daily scheduled flights are available from Nairobi’s Wilson airport to Amboseli airstrip approximately 45 minute drive to camp.

Location

The Ol Kinyei conservancy, where this African camp is located, is exclusive to Porini Camps and plays host to just one other non-seasonal camp which makes for an extraordinarily intimate wildlife experience, with very few other cars sharing your sightings. The conservancy safari is a recognized hotspot for the big cats and especially cheetahs, which are seen regularly, often with cubs. It is also home to large herds of elephants, apart from the plains game for which the Maasai Mara eco-system is justly famous. Safari drives can also be taken in the nearby Maasai Mara National Reserve and the adjacent Naboisho Conservancy.

The Porini Cheetah Camp is located close to the Olare Lemunyi watercourse, between the White Rock feature on the one hand and a marsh fed by a permanent underground spring that is a magnet for the antelopes and zebras, especially in the dry season. The White Rock is an excellent location for sun downers because of the view from the top.
