Most visitors to Rwanda will arrive into Kigali’s international airport to access the country’s many scenic and wildlife attractions, and the city can be a comfortable stop-over at the start or end of a Rwanda tour.

Kigali is Rwanda’s rapidly expanding Capital city and an increasingly important centre of commerce and trade, yet it has retained the pleasant feel of a garden city with a low-rise centre, green spaces and elegant boulevards.

There is a range of hotels of a good standard and a varied choice of restaurants and cafes – some reflecting the country’s former links with Belgium – as well as an increasing number of wine bars and trendy clubs.

Various memorial attractions – including the Kigali Memorial Center – are a poignant reminder of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 when over one million people were killed in just 100 days. These sobering yet meaningful sites can be included on tours to learn about the atrocities and how these have shaped Rwanda’s cultural and social history.

A busy and vibrant craft market at the centre offers a colourful insight into Rwandan life and is a great spot for unique hand-crafted souvenirs.

Hello, I am Sally Wanjau, and I have been travelling to Kenya on safari since the 1980’s which led to me living and working there for several years. Married to a Kenyan, it is a place that I now call home. I currently live in the UK with my husband. For a number of years, I ran my own safari business as an agent working closely with Gamewatchers Safaris creating unique and tailor-made holidays for my clients, and in 2017 I joined Gamewatchers Safaris full-time as one of their dedicated team of Safari Advisers.
